Major Richard Star Act

Veterans organizations continue to organize around the Major Richard Star Act.

The federal legislation would allow veterans to receive full benefits from Department of Defense retirement pay and Department of Veterans Affairs disability compensation.

Disabled American veterans National Commander Joe Parsetich said, "the issue of concurrent receipt is one of fairness."

"Military retiree pay and VA compensation for life-changing, and often lifelong, disabilities are for separate reasons, and one should not impact the other," he argued.

Beware of scams

Today, the Military Times published an article titled, "Watch out for hefty charges to 'help' vets with disability claims."

"According to the VA, there is no statistically significant difference in the average number of days it takes any type of filer to complete a rating-related claim," the article explained. "In the current fiscal year, time frames have ranged from 129.7 days to 139.4 days whether veterans make a claim unassisted (which would include those who use unaccredited representatives) or use VSOs, agents, or attorneys."
